Category: Carrier Oils

Description:

Jojoba oil is a liquid derived from the seeds of the Simmondsia chinensis plant, a shrub native to southern Arizona, southern California, and northwestern Mexico. This oil constitutes about 50% of the jojoba seeds weight. Unlike traditional vegetable oils, jojoba oil is often referred to as jojoba wax due to its unique chemical composition. It is primarily made up of wax esters—long-chain fatty acids and alcohols—rather than triglycerides, which gives it remarkable shelf life and heat resistance. This composition also sets it apart from other oils, making it exceptionally stable under varying temperatures. Historically, the odham Native American tribe used jojoba oil to treat wounds and sores. The modern domestication of jojoba began in the early 1970s, as its commercial potential was realized. During World War II, jojoba oil was used by the U.S. military as an additive in motor oils, transmission oils, and as a lubricant for machine guns. Today, jojoba oil is primarily used in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals due to the slow growth and difficulty of cultivating the jojoba plant. It has become a popular substitute for whale oil, particularly after the U.S. banned the import of whale oil in 1971. Jojoba oil proved to be an ideal replacement for sperm whale oil, offering superior qualities for a variety of applications. It is now commonly found in products like moisturizers, lotions, and hair care items such as shampoos and conditioners, especially those marketed as natural or eco-friendly
